This was a labour of love for my friend who creates music that is in the genre of dubstep trap music mixed with heavy metal (what a combo and a mouthful). For this brief I needed to create an album cover to be used for digital services Spotify and iTunes as well as print material such as vinyl album covers. The concept was life escaping from death and through idea generation I had the idea of a rainbow (life) being expelled from the skull (death).
The process I undertook is outlined below:
Using a wooden frame and wire I made a structure that would be my base for the sculpture.
I then used fibre glass cloth and resin to create a solid foundation for my art work.
I sculpted a skull out of moulding clay and created a mould to be used for the top.
I created a resin skull with left over surfboard resin.
I then attached the skull to the stream using polyfiller.
A basecoat of white paint was then added.
I masked off the skull with tape and applied structural support.
Mixing an array of pigment tinted resin I then calculated the time needed to kick the resin to have a rainbow blend.
Pouring the resin at different intervals allowed to get a build up of colours on the stream.
Once the resin had cured a drybrush grey was added to the skull.
I then hand painted sugar style art on the skull using water-based paints.
Using a DSLR numerous photos where taken with the idea of using them to create an animated GIF as a supplement
I hand painted a portrait of a female using basic media so that it could be used to combine with the sculpture.
The manipulation was done in photoshop and all type setting was done in indesign.
